Three Bathroom Improvements For Safety Purposes

Posted on: 29 December 2020

There are a lot of changes you can and should make to your home when someone who lives in the home suffers a permanent injury or their advanced age puts them at risk of falling or makes certain tasks physically hard for them. One of the things you want to do is to determine all of the risks there are in the home and then decide how you can make them safer. One of the most dangerous rooms in a home is the bathroom. There are three things you can do to help make the bathroom in your home that is used by the person you are concerned about a safer space for them. Here are what those three things are.

Put non-slip flooring in

You have choices when it comes to making the flooring a non-slip surface. One thing you can do is to remove the slippery flooring and install one that has a naturally non-slip surface, even when it gets wet. Or, if you already like the flooring that is in the bathroom and you have no desire to have it replaced, then there is a non-slip coating you can have applied to its surface that will help prevent slips and falls, whether the flooring is dry or wet.

Change the way the door opens

No matter how large the bathroom is, it can be extremely dangerous to have the door so it opens inward. If someone does end up falling, passing out, or otherwise ending up hurt and on the floor where they can't unlock or open the door, then you may need to break the door open to get in the bathroom to help them. Even worse, if they end up blocking the door, then you can injure them worse just getting into the bathroom and it will be extremely difficult to do so. This is why the bathroom door should open outward.

Install a walk-in bathtub

One of the major reasons why bathrooms are so dangerous is due to the tubs. Even people in great shape often get hurt when they are getting in or out. The deeper the tub is, the harder it will be for someone to get in. Some people may not be able to get in the tub at all. When you put in a walk-in one, then everyone can bathe without the risks of being hurt in the process. Contact a walk-in tub installation service to get started.
